So, yesterday was a full day, but a good one. It started very early as I was up at 4:30 AM. Since my first chemo treatment, Tuesday my sleep patterns have not been great. MA thinks it is because she has been in bed with me to keep me company and that she cannot get comfortable which is keeping me awake. Being up so early, I was hopeful that my paper would be in the box but no luck so I had my coffee and caught up on Facebook and Twitter.  I believe the spring snow slowed down the delivery.

The kids got up for school around 6:45. As they were getting ready, I was preparing the recycling and garbage as it was garbage day. I was hoping that the kids could bring it all to the curb while they walked to the bus. One did but not the other two. I finished the job and picked up my paper at the same time.

Later in the morning, I spent some time doing my taxes. I was hoping to get them done prior to chemo but I was a bit distracted for some reason. It did not go easy but I struggled through the tax software bugs, got all the info in and got them done. The first look of the results did not look good but I found a mistake I had made when I was trying to overcome one of the bugs and that changed the numbers so that, as a family, we were ahead. Yeah!

The kids only had a half day of school. I think it was because it was parent-teacher interviews for the high-school students. Just another reminder that I picked the wrong job. Cassy went to the mall with a friend while Gene and Isa came home. After lunch, One of MA’s friends, Yvette, a.k.a. The Muffin Lady, came by to drop off some delicious muffins and spend some time with MA. While that was going on, I took G to visit the Shop Chez Richard to pick up some tools. G is going to a workshop on Saturday to learn how to maintain, fix and rewire her fencing electrical equipment like her foil and wires.  I am talking about the sport, not the electric fence that keeps out the freaks (could have used that at the emerg last Friday with MA)! Earlier in the week, Richard offered to donate some tools to her for this. We are vary thankful of of his generosity.

While we were gone, Isabelle took advantage of the great snowman making snow and created a masterpiece that really reflects what we are going through. I have placed a picture below. It is a snowman with a broken leg, crutches and a nice red heart. She tried hard to put in an IV line into his arms but she could not find a vein in those skinny little twigs of arms. Instead, she used a Sens scarf to represent me. It is amazing how good it looks.

G and I got back from our shopping trip just as the Muffin Lady was leaving.  We said our goodbyes and thanked her for the tasty treats. I was feeling the lack of sleep so I decided to got to bed. MA tried to join me but she could not settle down. Also, we got a call from our neighbour. She had just made a delicious sheppard’s pie, hot out of the oven. It made for a great dinner. It replaced the original plan to have Melissa’s (another of MA’s great soccer friends) cashew chicken meal. We will keep that for tonight.

I was still sleeping while the rest of the family ate it but they saved me some for later. I slept from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM. It was great and I felt refreshed. So much so that I decided to go to my Thursday night hockey. With the pregame nap and pregame meal of sheppard’s pie, I was set to play a great game. This had been one of my goals since this all started. When I first was diagnosed my brother mentioned that I need to set small goals throughout to keep me motivated and stay positive. This was definitely a big one for me to achieve and I did so with flying colours.

I got to the game around 9:30 PM to the surprise and amazement of the entire team. I suited up and got on the ice for the pregame skate. I started the game with my usual line of Cole and James. They are great players that make me look good on every shift. They did not disappoint tonight either. I played an amazing game with more energy than I had had in the last month. I scored a goal with a few assists and had two beakaways from my blue line that I did not score on. I do not usually get many of these so I am going to need to practice my penalty shot moves to outwit the goalies during the offseason.

I had so much energy that I even joined the boys for the post games beers. I did not drink any alcohol but I did have my usual wings. That may not have been one of my best decisions as I am now suffering a bit with abdominal pains. I got home still giddy from playing. It was a great night and I am glad I went. The boys were happy to see me and I was too.

I am thankful for all the support we have been receiving. Though I can’t take advantage of all of it immediately, I am grateful that they are there. It is allowing me to push myself more knowing that they are there to catch me if I need it. Thank you to everyone! We appreciate all your help and support.

  1. Hi Darren

Glad to see you are still coming out to Thursday night hockey. Sorry I missed last Thursdays game to witness that oustanding performance. I went to the Sens game but the whole time there wished I would have been with you guys playing. Hope to see you next Thursday. All the best. Keep Pushing.
