Today, I finally got around to emptying the garage of all my empty beer and wine bottles. Ironically, I had started packing them up the week leading into my party to get them ready for transport. At the time, I thought I would wait to bring them in since I was expecting a few more from Mary Ann’s soccer friends. Little did I know at the time, there was going to be a lot that I would need to bring back. Also, last night, the twins picked up more bottles as part of a girl guide bottle drive. Needless to say, I had a good haul for the beer store, almost $40 worth split between us and girl guides. Not bad considering that beer cans/bottles are $0.10 each and wine bottles are $0.20.
As you know already, I gave up drinking during my therapy to ensure that my liver could function at its peak performance. It has been about two months now since I have drank (with the exception of a small scotch whiskey at Gord’s dinner). This has been the longest I have gone since I started drinking when I was 16 (sorry mom 🙁 ). Well I guess my soberness is having an impact on beer sales at The Beer Store. While MA and I were returning our bottles, we noticed the sign below. (Yes, that is my bald head in the photo.)
It seems that they are collecting empties this Saturday, May 28, for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society. They must have heard about me and the fact that I stopped drinking. Knowing that I would not start drinking for just any cause, I guess they figured this one would be the only one I could drink for/to. It was a nice try but I think I will stick to just donating cash instead, for now. I did not realize I was drinking that much that they needed to find a way to get me to come back! I had already put a bunch of bottles on the conveyor and was just waiting to cash out when I saw the sign so there was no way I was coming back this weekend. I did drop a bunch of change into the collection box they had available.
With this, I would like to ask you all to drink all the alcohol you have in your house so that you can donate the empties on Saturday. If you do not have any empties, go buy some beer and drink it all before Saturday. I give you all permission to skip work the next two days so that you can get more drinking time in. Let me know if you need me to call you in sick.
Please be generous with your donations when you do go. Both Marc and I will be very appreciative of all that you can give. If you do not live near a Beer Store, you can donate here bottledrive.ca.
I wish you would have written this post on Tuesday as I could have used the extra two days off for my move tomorrow. We are leaving for Whitby for 5 weeks and I will be going for 3 weeks. Next time you start a bottle drive fro. Your blogs let me know so I can bye us a round. Thanks for the great post and call me this weekly when you have time.
Funny stuff Darren. Missed you at hockey last Tues., especially in nets. Only 1 goalie….and that sucks. See you soon, Steve
Sorry I was not there. I did not feel well and needed sleep. Took advantage that morning. Will be there next time.
I’m loving reading your blog. You have a knack for storytelling. How come you never pursued writing as a career?
I blame my teachers (no offence). I was never as good in my language courses back in school. For this reason, I went into engineering thinking I would no longer need to write. My mistake! I write more now than I ever would have thought. Thank you for sharing your thoughts as it helps inspire me more.
